To the True North

Remote, adventurous and downright inspiring. We travel to the furthest north accessible by motorized vehicles in Spitsbergen in summer or by snowmobiles in winter. Just like explorers decades ago, we spend days climbing on the glacier, skiing around the fjord and snow valleys and immerse ourselves in the Arctic silence.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: ARRIVE LONGYEARBYEN 

Arrive into Longyearbyen where you are met and transferred to the Basecamp Hotel for rest and relax. Later, you will be briefed on your program ahead for the next days. 

Overnight: Basecamp Hotel, Longyearbyen

DAY 2: LONGYEARBYEN / NORDENSKIOLD LODGE

The day starts early after breakfast where you meet your guide, dress up in survival suits before heading to the harbour to the open boat where you will travel all the way to the Billefjorden and Adolfbukta. There are plenty of wildlife around the fjords at this time of the year, so we have good chances to see some arctic birds, walruses, belugas or even the polar bear. Once at Nordenskjold Lodge, we will enjoy an outdoor lunch to get familiar with the cabin and surroundings. After lunch, it is time to head out to the arctic nature and explore the beauty around us. Before the evening, we return to the lodge, prepare a delicious dinner and warm up a sauna.

DAY 3: NORDENSKIOLD LODGE

We start the day with good breakfast and if the weather is good, we can spend the morning to learn how to paddle a kayak. Kayaking is the perfect way to get around in the arctic and the very traditional way to explore the arctic shorelines. After some practice, we set out for a day trip to Brucebyen. We will paddle across the magnificent glacier front with icebergs and arctic wildlife. On the other side of the fjord lies Brucebyen. The small settlement consists of huts that were built 100 years ago by a Scottish geologist. Learn about the fascinating history and after a long day in the cold Arctic sea, it is wonderful to relax in the sauna and then a delicious dinner.

DAY 4: NORDENSKIOLD LODGE

Today, we head out to the majestic Nordenskiold Glacier. After breakfast, we go through the basic guidelines for glacier walking and climbing before exploring the glacier that lays just 300m from the lodge. We spend the day on the glacier walking up and down in the glacier cracks and enjoying the shining glacier around us. Lunch will be expedition style and as we return in the evening, we enjoy dinner over a bonfire with views of the fjord.

DAY 5: NORDENSKIOLD LODGE

Today, we put on our hiking boots and head out of the door to the nearby mountain peaks exploring the beautiful arctic land, glacier moraines and small flowers surviving in the harsh environment. We will reach one of the nearby mountain peaks and enjoy an expedition lunch on the way.

DAY 6: NORDENSKIOLD LODGE / LONGYEARBYEN

After breakfast, we have a chance for a last hike to the moraine or the glacier before enjoying a deserved lunch at the lodge and thereafter, return to civilization. We make a stop in Pyramiden on the way back to Longyearbyen and get to see the Russian settlement up close. Finally, we return to Longyearbyen by boat and arrive by the early evening.

DAY 7: DEPARTURE LONGYEARBYEN

Today, you will be transferred to Longyearbyen Airport for your onward journey home or continue your adventures around the Svalbard Archipelago or Norway.

Basecamp Hotel, Longyearbyen

Basecamp Hotel is located at the heart of Longyearbyen and is one of Longyearbyen's most unique hotel, decorated in a traditional trapper style with driftwood, sealskin and slate. Despite its rusticity, it is a high quality accommodation with comfortable beds and hot showers in all the rooms. 

Nordenskiold Lodge

Located on the shores of Isfjorden, at the edge of the Blue Glacier is Nordenskiold Lodge, a 5-bedroom expedition lodge with no running water or electricity. Wood is used to heat the cabin and drinking water is obtained from the melting glacier. There is a traditional sauna to enjoy after a long cold day out.
